Car Tire Maintenance Tips

Keeping your tires in good condition is very important for safe driving. Here are a few car tire maintenance tips to keep the right performance and longevity of your tires:

1. Regularly check your car tires and make sure that they are inflated according to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. By doing so, you'll be able to improve your fuel economy by up to 10%. A tire that is underinflated wears faster because of its higher operating temperature and the extra flexing of the rubber. This causes deterioration of the tire casing and rapid wear of the tread shoulders. Overinflation, meanwhile, increases wear due to the decreased size of the contact area between the car tire and the road.

2. Never leave your garage without a spare tire. You’ll be thankful you have one when a tire gets a puncture in a remote location. If using a compact spare tire, remember not to exceed 50 mph and replace it at the earliest opportunity. Remove any stones and other objects embedded in a car tire’s tread. If you find a nail, do not remove it as the tire will rapidly deflate.

3. Do a visual inspection of your tires. Allot a few minutes once a month to check if there's any visible damage to either the tread area or the sidewall of your car tires. 

4. Wash your car tires too. Use only mild detergent and water and a soft bristle brush in cleaning your tires. Avoid a cleaning agent that contains chemicals for it can crack and discolor the tires.
